The basics of this position:

Performs duties necessary to administer and coordinate the institution’s enterprise relational database management systems. Duties include administering Oracle database systems, systems security, system performance monitoring and tuning, establish operational standards, and recommend hardware and software upgrades. Monitors industry trends in database computing, recommending investigation and possible acquisition of relevant technologies identified as strategic priorities. Serves as a specialized technical consultant to the technology support staff.

What you'll do:

  • Implements and configures database instances, replication, backup, partitions, storage, and access. Troubleshoots and permanently corrects platform problems in a timely manner to provide 24/7 availability of services. Responsible for managing problem escalation to Oracle and third-party support teams as appropriate.
  • Implements new versions, updates, and patches fixes to the database management systems. Maintains detailed knowledge of computer hardware and software trends and advancements. Manages large-scale projects regarding relational database management systems.
  • Ensures security of Oracle, SQL Server and other databases against intruders and malicious activity. Coordinates and monitors system security for the database.
  • Analyzes audit logs and takes appropriate action to address anomalies. Responds to legitimate internal and external requests for security related information.
  • Creates and maintains user and system accounts in accordance with college policy and industry best practices for data security. Sets user privileges and access controls within the database environment.
  • Routinely communicates with Information Technology (IT) and College directors and managers to codify institutional expectations into systems specifications for database architectures. Coordinates solutions with third party vendors to ensure control of database projects.
  • Troubleshoots application systems that interface with Oracle databases. Monitors and helps tune those systems to ensure system integrity and provide high performance, high availability service.
  • Implements new versions, updates, and patches to database systems.
  • Implements business continuity and disaster recovery protocols. Operates, monitors and maintains redundant data center platforms for a disaster response. Tests disaster recovery protocols and platforms to ensure timely and reliable restoration of critical business activities.
  • Optimizes database performance using index tuning and other tools available in the environment. Develops programs and scripts that automate routine database maintenance, performance tuning and security tasks.
  • Advises programming staff, LINUX and Microsoft system administrators on advanced technical aspects pertaining to relational databases and related application software.
  • Trains and instructs functional leaders and users in the proper use of multiple software products to maximize available capabilities.
  • Participates in the formal system change management process and is responsible for ensuring that database changes are tested and perform as intended. The DBA is responsible for the integrity and security of the databases and must be vigilant in protecting the database from unauthorized changes and disruptive system processes.
  • Coordinates modifications, upgrades, new implementation, and decommissioning efforts with affected system users. Documents all activity.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education, experience, and other requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or closely related discipline or equivalent work experience and education/training providing similar knowledge and skills in database design and administration is necessary.
  • Five (5) or more years in an enterprise computing environment, of comparable complexity, including three (3) years of directly related, full-time experience in database administration experience beyond degree equivalence is required.
  • Certification in systems and applications to be supported may be considered an equivalency for experience requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

• ORACLE certification is highly desired, depending on position needs.
