The basics of this position:
Assist students in achieving educational goals by providing individual and small group tutoring sessions in academic writing and reading comprehension, English grammar, and listening comprehension. Integrate sessions with study and learning strategies to promote learning. Facilitate learning by building rapport with students as an academic coach or mentor; may assist with creation/development of activities, workshops, and supplemental materials; including, but not limited to, handouts, study guides, and tip sheets to use with students. Other job-related duties as assigned.
What you'll do:
- Provides individual and small group tutoring sessions in various academic disciplines in order to facilitate student mastery of concepts or applications of a specific course of study.
Facilitates learning as a coach or mentor to assist students in becoming successful, independent learners.
Integrates effective study and learning strategies to maximize students’ potential for academic progress.
May assist students with the use of institutional and instructional technology.
Assists with the development and delivery of tutor training.
Creates supplemental materials including but not limited to handouts, study guides, and tip sheets for support center staff to use with students.
Attends scheduled staff meetings and takes initiative to sustain and improve daily operations.
Remains current on best practices, research and literature in the tutoring field. Other duties as assigned.
Education, experience, and other requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in TESL, TESOL —or in related field with TESL Certification.
At least two years of relevant experience as ESL instructor or tutor preferably at a community college or academic ESL program.
Working knowledge of a second language.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in TESOL or at least 18 hours graduate level Applied Linguistics or TESL.
Fluent or near-fluent in second language.
