Position Summary:


The Montage student newspaper is hiring for editor positions to help lead student reporters with producing content for the publication. Each section editor of The Montage is responsible for generating, assigning, and editing content for their assigned pages. Section editors also assist in the training of staff members working within their section.

Primary Duties Performed:

Assume responsibility for all content in the section
 Provide a weekly report to the managing editor regarding the status of stories, graphics, photos, and design for the section
 Assign stories/assignments to staff members with instructions about content possibilities, length, and deadlines
 Follow up with reporters about the status of individual assignments before deadline
 Edit and proofread all section content while working with writers and reporters to verify
information such as names, numbers, and accuracy of details within each story
 Train staff and improve the reporting and writing quality by providing extensive feedback
regarding angles, sources, leads, and overall content during the editing process
 Write all stories for the section unclaimed by writers
 Communicate with the photo and graphic design editors to plan visual elements of each page
 Design and lay out the section with a focus on fair and accurate coverage
 Edit headlines and/or captions
 Develop and maintain contact with sources appropriate to the section
 Maintain high journalism standards, acting as an example to the staff and the college community contributing as an active writer, designer, or photographer on staff with every issue
 Represent staff by attending Board of Trustee and student governance meetings or by assigning this task to a staff reporter

$15.00 Per Hour
